Background

HST.936 focuses on studying innovation in information systems to accelerate improvements of health outcomes in developing countries.  It is increasingly clear that progress in the field of global health technology requires a coordinated interdisciplinary approach. This can best be accomplished by convening multidisciplinary teams to develop innovations that are thoughtfully combined to yield solutions greater than the sum of their individual parts.

Our objectives are four fold. (1) to develop projects to improve the research enterprise; (2) to connect isolated ongoing efforts; (3) to engage social scientists, given the role that socio-political forces have played in molding today’s research structure. (4) to empower students – the future scientists – who are not yet entrenched in the current system to explore fresh ideas.

Sana has developed a model of organizing mobile health hackathon events with the goal of encouraging increased collaboration between engineers and medical professionals and leveraging the growing prevalence of cellphones to provide health solutions in resource limited settings.
